Readorkable rating in a nutshell: Not Bad, Not Good

Cover: This is one of the most beautiful covers I have ever laid my eyes on! The colour scheme, the dress and the stars… I won’t lie, That’s the reason why I bought this book.

Review: I had heard lots of hype about this book recently. I had bought it about 2 years ago but somehow I never got around to reading it. These Broken Stars was always on my TBR, not too far from my eyes in case I wanted to look at its beautiful cover. I had also read in record time a 600 page book that you may or may not have heard of by (partly) Amie Kaufman as well, The Illuminae Files. Now, that review will come soon but let me tell you, it’s so good. SO, SO, SO GOOD! Anyway, I digress, when Bout Of Books Started, I decided it was high time I read it. When the book starts we are on a giant Spaceliner called the Icarus and that’s where we first meet our two protagonists. The book is told in alternating points of view and we get to hear our main characters inner monologues.

When it comes to world building, Megan Spooner and Amie Kaufman did a well enough job to keep me oriented, I wasn’t confused, I knew what needed to know and I am very thankful for that. There wasn’t a direct antagonist or villain in the book,it was Tarver and Lilac VS THE PLANET and about a good third of the book was about trekking across THE PLANET. I am not a fan of walking books, hence why i did not read any of The Lord Of The Ring books. Here, take a look at this Clerks 2 clip. This explains my dislike for the LOTR trilogy.

The book was satisfying enough in keeping me interested enough to read but I found myself wanting to be more invested in the story. I felt a lot of it seemed superficial and the authors missed out on a better plot.

What I really did enjoy was Lilac’s evolution, her personality (most of the time) and her smarts. I was very happy that she could hold her own. Tarver, I knew he was supposed to be a tough guy with a heart of gold but I found him quite sheepish and I certainly didn’t swoon over him.

We read a few times about Lilac’s Father, Roderick Laroux, and Lilac often allude’s that he controls her every moment and she isn’t allowed to talk to any boys ever, that any boy who shows the slightest interest in her “disappears”. I’m pretty sure we will hear about him a lot more in the coming books.

Then the big climactic event happened and I couldn’t understand why the authors went in that direction. It felt as if a fan of the book had changed that part because of his/her love for the Characters. That part of the book suffered of Main Character Syndrome where nothing can bring them down. I just couldn’t connect there at all. I am not saying “Don’t read this”. I enjoyed reading it save for the few parts that peeved me.

I will be picking up the sequels because there are new protagonists and I am curious to see where the world takes me.

I will give this book 3 out of 5 Broken Stars! AKA a Triple Kill!
